For many Northwest Sound guests, Don “Fergie” Ferguson is the first face of the chorus that they meet and remember. NWS members feel like Fergie has been a fixture here forever, but actually he is from central California, and has been in the Puget Sound area since the late ‘80s.
While in high school, Fergie was a percussionist in the band, and he sang in the choir. Fergie surely used his musical talents to help woo his high school sweetheart Sandy, whom he married three years after they met. Although Sandy does not sing, she is an avid supporter of NWS, and you can see her helping out at pretty much all our shows and functions. The couple has two children and six grandchildren.
In 1996, Fergie was looking for a place to get a haircut at a BARBERSHOP, and the wonderful world of the internet introduced him to the singing style instead of the hair style. His curiosity was piqued, and he joined the Harmony Kings shortly thereafter. While he was at the district convention some ten years ago (or so), Kevin Kelly asked him if he wanted to go to International with NWS if they won. At that time, you had to be a member of qualifying chorus before competing at district in order to compete at international. Fergie said yes, handed Kevin $10, and was instantly a member. NWS did not win that particular competition, but Fergie has been with us ever since. His first international convention was in Indianapolis in 2004.
Fergie enjoys singing lead with the chorus, and also in quartets such as Out of the Blue, and was a District Senior Champion with Vericose Harmony. He has also been the Membership Chairman for several years, and you can see him welcoming guests every Wednesday night at rehearsals. Fergie has also adopted the sing! Sing! SING! program as another of his missions in the chorus, and has successfully organized and produced it for several years. This has resulted in hundreds of men receiving free singing lessons for six weeks in-a-row in the fall, and many new members for Northwest Sound. Thanks Fergie!
When Fergie and Sandy are not doing something with the chorus, they can often be found enjoying the outdoors by camping with a local RV group.
